Professional and Academic English Program

Overview

This intensive 10-week program involves one English course, developed by API for those who require English in a professional capacity. Students acquire language and cultural skills in a professional environment through extensive professional interaction, research, reading, and writing of articles, reports and presentations.

To enroll in this program students are required to have English proficiency at the Advanced Level (TOEFL iBT score of 80 or higher). Students with a lower TOEFL score can first enroll in suitable Intensive English levels. The program focuses on the following three professional fields: Technical, Business, and Medical.

Classes are non-credit and meet for a total of three hours a day, four days a week,. Class size is limited to 16 students. Upon completion, students receive a certificate. The following skills will be developed in this program:

      • Use language in a cultural and professional context
      • Gain fluency in listening comprehension and speaking in different settings
      • Read and write professional reposrts and give oral presentations
      • Become fully prepared for a professional or academic career

      • Learning project management skills
      • Research using different resources such as libraries and the internet
      • Learning about academic and professional environments
      • Writing memos, reports, and articles, and giving presentations
      • Writing business communication

S: Synchronous Face-to-face through videoconferencing

A: Asynchronous. Lectures involve videos and written notes and are available online on the Moodle platform. They can be studied at any time before the next lecture.

Each session is 1.5 h long

Conversation sessions are supplementary and designed for additional speaking and listening practice conducted via videoconferencing by qualified teaching assistants who are advanced undergraduate or graduate American students, under the supervision of ESL teachers.

Office hours are designed to provide one-on-one advice and help by the ESL teacher

All synchronous communications including listening and speaking lectures, conversation sessions, and office hours are scheduled at suitable times by geographical zones, to accommodate students' schedules.
